CNN's Jake Tapper grills MS Gov. on Roe overturn: Given your track record why should people believe you?
CNN’s State of the Union host Jake Tapper did not allow Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves to bloviate over Roe v. Wade’s overturn.
Republicans understand that the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade is a loser. They sent out talking points that told Republicans to talk about the leak and be more compassionate about the abortion issue.
Based on the number of interviews the Mississippi State governor Tate Reeves is doing, it seems like he is the token spokesperson to put lipstick on the pig. You know he would be in trouble as even Chuck Todd used a few sentences to call out the governor for running a lousy state government that does not take care of its people.
After Tapper asked the governor several questions about the effects of overturning Roe v. Wade, he opened the door for Tapper to remind him of some very inconvenient truths.
“What I can tell you is what we’re trying to do in Mississippi is we’re trying to provide those potential expectant mothers the resources that they need so that they can go to a full term of pregnancy if they choose to keep that child,” Governor Tate Reeves said. “And then that’s a great outcome. But if they choose not to, we want to make sure that we have plans in place to protect those babies. Once they’re born.”
Oops! What about those who have been born for years. What is the state doing? Jake Tapper was ready to expose the governor.
“Mississippi, as you know, has the highest rate of infant mortality in the United States,” Jake Tapper said. “You have the highest rate of child poverty in the United States. Your state has no guaranteed maternity leave. That’s paid. The legislature in Mississippi just rejected extending postpartum Medicaid coverage. Your foster care system is also the subject of a long-running federal lawsuit over its failure to protect children from abuse. I hear you say you want to do more to support mothers and children, but you’ve been in state government since 2004. You were the state treasurer then. You were the lieutenant governor and the governor. Based on the track record of the state of Mississippi. Why should any of these girls or moms believe you?”
Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Tapper hit the nail on the head. Jake Tapper had several other questions for the governor, including whether contraception is now in danger. He never gave an absolute answer. He deflected instead. The same applies to his explanation for the law forcing a woman to carry an incestual pregnancy to term.
Check out the entire interview. I am sure you will find it very revealing as the shamelessness of the governor is palpable. It is qualifiable that the Republican Party is now the American Taliban. And they are not ashamed of it.
