Notes
To many, last week was depressing. Two Democrats allied themselves with Republicans to endanger our Democracy. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema will pay the price for harming the Americans who elected them.
Let’s make sure to dispel any legitimacy of Manchin and Sinema's refusal to modify the filibuster on claims it will break the Senate. The Senate has been broken for some time. In fact, three Supreme Court Justices appointed by a President that did not even get the majority vote is proof. Moreover, Sinema and Manchin had no problem forgoing the filibuster for policies that aid the rich. Yet the two Senators are immutable for voting rights and middle-class-centered policies like Build Back Better.
Manchin recently used inflation for his rationale for not passing Build Back Better. He is lying. Most economists have calculated that Build Back Better policies will be minimal on inflation. But it is simple, one can only get price increases if there are shortages or there are monopolies. While the private sector failed to maintain a robust supply chain, the shortage of products in the aggregate is non-existent.
Lastly, our disappointment with the failure to pass voting rights and Build Back Better must not be a voting deflator. We must make it a catalyst for us to get out there and increase the vote to rid ourselves of paid-for politicians.Politics Done Right airs two days a week on KPFT 90.1 FM Houston (kpft.org) on Thursdays at Noon Central and on Fridays at 11:00 AM Central. Sen. Amy Klobuchar all but called Joe Manchin a liar on filibuster stance as she slammed Republicans
Senator Amy Klobuchar slammed Republican Senators and implicitly called Joe Manchin a liar for his filibuster statement.
When it was time for Joe Manchin to give his speech about modifying the filibuster to pass the voting rights bill, he made a fool of himself. He claimed that it would mean a Senate without rules even though the rule change would be for the voting rights bill only.
Manchin willfully neglects that there are three far-Right Supreme Court Justices who are there because Mitch McConnell changed the filibuster to allow Supreme Court Justices to be installed on a 51-vote majority. It is clear that the poster behind Manchin is false. It said the following.
Joe Manchin Lied
“The United States has never been able to end debate with a simple majority.”
But it was up to Amy Klobuchar who would call out Joe Manchin as a liar without mentioning him by name as she excoriated the Republicans.
"There are 160 exceptions, 160 exceptions to the filibuster bull," Amy Klobuchar said. "Things have been changed to benefit my colleagues from the other side of the aisle. Somehow it only takes 51 votes to put in place the Trump tax cuts or the Bush tax cuts. Somehow it only took 51 votes to put Amy Coney Barrett on the Supreme Court of the United States, a change made by them. Somehow it only takes 51 votes to try to overturn a regulation or try to mess around with the Affordable Care Act. But then when it comes to something like voting rights, suddenly everyone on the other side of the aisle is hugging that filibuster tight knowing that so many times in history including most recently with a debt ceiling, changes have been made to allow a vote with less than 60 votes, the National Gas Policy Act in 1977, in 1995, the Endangered Species Act, in 1996 changed the reconciliation process."
Her closing sentence was prescient and needs to be on the tip of our tongues.
“Silencing the people of America all in the name of an archaic senate rule that isn't even in the constitution, that's just wrong!”
It could not be said any clearer.

Sen Maggie Hassan: Never imagined that today’s Republican Party would fail to stand up for Democracy
Senator Maggie Hassan made clear why she now supports modifying the filibuster. And she necessarily scorched those who forced her hands.
Senator Maggie Hassan decided to speak out of turn to correct the record. Republican Senator Tom Cotton called out Hassan for going back on her word in a letter supporting no change to filibuster. She would not take the rebuke kindly.
"I know I was not scheduled to speak," Maggie Hassan said. "but I do want to respond as one of the signatories of the letter I associate myself with. Everything that the other signatories have talked about in terms of wanting to restore the Senate's tradition of extended debate on issues of grave importance to the American people. But let me be clear about the reason that I now support an adjustment to the long-standing rules of the Senate. And it is because I never imagined when I signed that letter that not a single member of the Republican Party would stand up for our democracy."
Hassan then went on to describe a degenerate Republican Party. She called them out for being the anti-democratic fascists they have become.
"Since January 6 when we saw an acceleration of state laws that would allow partisans to overturn the impartial count of an election," Hassan said. "But if we do not have a functioning democracy where people know that when they vote that vote will be impartially counted and upheld, and the people who are defeated will accept defeat so that they can have an accountable elected representation in Washington, then there is no democracy. And when I signed that letter, I never imagined that today's Republican Party would fail to stand up for democracy."
Senator so wanted to make sure that America understood that the Republican Party is anti-democracy, she pointed it out twice in her short narrative. While Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema are joining the Republican Party to stifle democracy, rest assured that the grassroots organizing can get through all the hoops the fascist has placed in the voting roadmap in the short term.
Bill Kristol has good advice for what Democrats should not do if they want to win
It is hard to believe that Bill Kristol is a bona fide Conservative. He believes voting Democrat is the only option. And he has prescient advice for Democrats to win.
Bill Kristol is serious about helping Democrats win.
I have interviewed Bill Kristol on Politics Done Right. He continues to be a very devout Conservative. But most importantly, he is a patriot. I'm not too fond of Bill Kristol's politics. One should remember that he has a military-industrial complex affinity. That said, I respect his desire to protect our democracy. I have gained a respect for him I did not previously have.
Kristol appeared on MSNBC and gave Democrats some free advice that I agree with completely.
"If the Democrats just say, you know, we did a good job. We people don't quite see how good the job we did. And those Republicans, they don't really stand for anything. They will not do well. They will not do the normal thing that happens in an off-year election. Voters, they have grievances. They are disappointed. In some ways, it's not quite as great as they thought. It would be in November or two years ago, and so they vote somewhat against the incumbent party against the party that has the White House. The Democrats have to create a choice. They can't let it just be a referendum on the Biden Administration. And they've got to make the choice stark. And the choice can't just be the Republicans don't have a platform. It has to be that the Republicans are crazy!"
He leaves nothing to the imagination, in other words. Just vote Democratic. Kristol has been making the rounds as if he is on a mission to use whatever influence he has to elicit the proper political behavior of the voters.

Claire McCaskill admonishes Democrats for bad messaging. They will deserve McConnell if they lose
Claire McCaskill decided to tell a few truths in a recent exchange on MSNBC and one hopes Democrats are listening with the intent to follow through.
Claire McCaskill is no Progressive. But she nails this one all the way around.
