Summary
Sunday’s political programs recycled the familiar socialist scare, allowing Republicans and corporate Democrats to attack DSA while avoiding the failures of America’s oligarchic economy. DSA is an activist organization—not a political party—and its members do not uniformly embrace every plank in its platform. The honest debate should focus on policies, economic power, and whether society serves working people or concentrated wealth.
DSA-backed candidates generally compete through Democratic primaries because America’s two-party system leaves independent movements few viable alternatives.
Critics falsely treat DSA as a monolith while overlooking major ideological disagreements within both the Democratic and Republican parties.
Corporate media weaponize “socialism” but rarely scrutinize capitalism, even as American families struggle with healthcare costs, housing, debt, stagnant wages, and economic insecurity.
Nordic countries demonstrate that markets can function as economic tools while democratic governments guarantee healthcare, education, labor protections, pensions, and other public goods.
Attacks involving Thanksgiving and “defund the police” substitute cultural outrage for serious discussions about Indigenous history, preventive social investments, public safety, and economic justice.
Conclusion: Americans must reject political labels designed to frighten them and judge policies by their results. Healthcare, housing, education, dignified wages, reproductive freedom, racial justice, and democratic control over the economy represent human rights—not radical threats.

The Socialist Scare Is a Distraction From America’s Capitalist Crisis
This Sunday, viewers watching the political talk shows saw a familiar spectacle. Republicans and corporate-friendly Democrats descended on the Democratic Socialists of America and the progressive values associated with it. They repeated the word “socialism” as though merely uttering it should end every debate.
But they avoided the debate that Americans desperately need: What kind of economic system produces the best life for the most people?
Let’s begin by clearing up a basic fact that pundits routinely obscure. The Democratic Socialists of America is not a political party. DSA says so explicitly. It is an independent political and activist organization. It does not have a national ballot line comparable to the Democratic or Republican parties.
Some DSA members participate in Democratic primaries. Some politicians accept DSA endorsements. Others simply run as Democrats because America’s two-party structure leaves very little room for viable alternatives.
Calling every progressive Democrat a DSA politician makes no more sense than calling every Republican a member of the Heritage Foundation.
And membership in an organization does not mean endorsing every sentence in its platform. Republicans routinely reject parts of their own party’s platform. Corporate Democrats often disregard the Democratic platform whenever its promises conflict with their donors. DSA contains social democrats, democratic socialists, labor activists, abolitionists, electoral organizers, and many others who disagree among themselves.
That does not place DSA beyond criticism. No political organization deserves immunity from scrutiny. But honest criticism examines individual policies and proposals. Propaganda takes the most provocative statement from one member and assigns it to an entire movement.
When Americans compare the three broad ideological frameworks, they should look beyond the labels.
The Republican agenda increasingly attacks democracy itself. It restricts voting, weakens unions, concentrates executive power, protects corporate monopolies, criminalizes vulnerable communities, and transfers more wealth to those who already possess the most.
The Democratic platform contains many humane and popular commitments, including defending Social Security, expanding healthcare, protecting reproductive freedom, strengthening labor rights, and confronting climate change. But the party’s governing establishment too often compromises those commitments to satisfy corporations, wealthy donors, private insurers, Wall Street, and the military-industrial complex.
The DSA platform contains positions that many Americans—including many progressives—will reject. But its foundational economic argument deserves an honest hearing: Working people should exercise more democratic control over the institutions that govern their lives, and the economy should meet human needs instead of maximizing profits for a small investor class.
That principle should not frighten ordinary people. It should frighten economic elites.
Notice how the Sunday pundits repeatedly used the word “socialism” while treating “capitalism” as though it were a law of nature. They need socialism to sound toxic because a serious examination of American capitalism would expose an economy that fails millions of people.
In the richest country in the world, families ration insulin. Workers hold two jobs and still cannot afford rent. College graduates carry debt for decades. Seniors split pills to make prescriptions last. Parents cannot find affordable childcare. Full-time workers rely on food banks while corporate executives receive compensation packages worth tens of millions of dollars.
That is not an unfortunate malfunction outside the system. The system produces those outcomes because it places the return on capital above the security of human beings.
According to the Federal Reserve, the wealthiest one percent of American households owned 31.6 percent of the country’s net worth in the first quarter of 2026. One percent controls nearly one-third of everything while millions of working families own little beyond their next paycheck.
That concentration follows a predictable economic equation.
When returns flowing to accumulated wealth grow faster than wages and the productive economy, those who already own stocks, corporations, intellectual property, and real estate capture an ever-larger share of national prosperity. Working people produce the value, but ownership claims the gains.
The wealthy then use that economic power to purchase political influence. They finance campaigns, lobby lawmakers, shape regulations, consolidate the media, and receive tax policies that accelerate the process. Wealth creates political power, and political power produces more wealth.
No society can continue that cycle indefinitely while maintaining a genuine democracy.
The defenders of the status quo respond with a predictable talking point: “Socialism has never worked.” They immediately mention Cuba and Venezuela while ignoring every society that combines markets with strong unions, universal public services, progressive taxation, and democratic government.
Now, honesty requires some nuance. Cuba’s and Venezuela’s economic problems do not have one cause. American sanctions have inflicted substantial damage, restricted trade, and deepened hardship. Domestic policy failures, authoritarian governance, corruption, commodity dependence, and poor economic management have also played important roles.
But if sanctions supposedly have little effect, why impose them? Their stated purpose is to generate economic pressure. Pundits cannot celebrate sanctions as powerful instruments of coercion and then pretend those sanctions have no effect when judging the resulting economy.
They also omit Norway and Denmark. These countries are not socialist states in the strict sense. They operate market economies and allow private enterprise. But that proves the progressive argument rather than refuting it.
In the United States, capitalism functions as the governing ideology. Government policy, labor law, healthcare, housing, taxation, and even education bend toward satisfying investors and maximizing private profit.
In the Nordic model, markets serve as tools within a democratic social contract. Strong unions, universal healthcare, paid family leave, public pensions, affordable education, social housing, and progressive taxation prevent private capital from dominating every aspect of life.
The question is not whether a society uses markets. Every modern economy uses a mixture of markets, public services, cooperatives, regulations, and government investment. The real question is this: Who controls the tools, who receives the benefits, and whose needs take priority?
Republicans and neoliberal Democrats would rather stage a cultural panic than answer that question.
Consider the attack on Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong over a 2020 social-media post calling for the cancellation of Thanksgiving. Critics stripped the statement of its historical context and transformed it into proof that democratic socialists hate America.
The rhetoric was politically clumsy, and candidates should explain what they mean. But Americans should also understand why many Indigenous people do not experience Thanksgiving as an uncomplicated celebration. European colonization brought dispossession, broken treaties, forced removal, cultural destruction, disease, and death.
Acknowledging that history does not require families to abandon gratitude, dinner, or community. It requires the country to stop demanding that conquered people celebrate a national myth that erases their suffering.
The same distortion occurred with “defund the police.” The slogan confused many voters and made an easy target for right-wing propagandists. But the central policy argument was never that communities should live without public safety.
It asked why society waits for an armed officer to respond after a crisis instead of investing in the conditions that prevent crises.
Why send police to address homelessness when housing professionals can do more? Why ask armed officers to manage every mental-health emergency? Why refuse to fund addiction treatment, youth programs, violence interruption, schools, decent jobs, and stable housing, then spend enormous sums policing the consequences of that neglect?
Police have a legitimate role in responding to violence and protecting communities. But police cannot substitute for healthcare, housing, education, mental-health treatment, or economic opportunity. True public safety begins long before someone calls 911.
America’s deeper problem involves its fear of historical truth.
The country mythologizes the Founders while minimizing their accommodation of slavery. It celebrates territorial expansion while concealing Indigenous genocide and Mexican dispossession. It praises liberty while forgetting that women lacked equal legal and political rights. It sings an anthem about freedom while avoiding the fuller history of the man who wrote it. It describes Jim Crow as a distant aberration rather than a political and economic system whose consequences remain visible.
Myths cannot liberate a country because myths do not describe reality.
Truth does not require Americans to hate their country. Truth gives them the knowledge required to improve it. Mature patriotism does not demand worship. It demands accountability.
Donald Trump has inadvertently created an opening for that reckoning. He did not invent America’s racism, misogyny, oligarchy, imperialism, religious nationalism, or authoritarian impulses. He consolidated them, amplified them, and displayed them without the polished language that once concealed them.
Trump represents the convergence of the country’s ugliest traditions: wealth masquerading as merit, cruelty masquerading as strength, ignorance masquerading as authenticity, domination masquerading as patriotism, and corruption masquerading as leadership.
That exposure creates an opportunity.
Americans can continue fighting over labels manufactured by politicians and pundits, or they can ask substantive questions.
Should healthcare exist as a human right or as a profit center?
Should workers receive the wealth their labor creates?
Should billionaires possess more political power than millions of voters?
Should corporations control essential services?
Should democracy stop at the workplace door?
Should national history comfort the powerful, or should it tell the truth?
The political establishment fears those questions because ordinary Americans often reach progressive answers when the labels disappear.
The task is not to defend every DSA statement, every slogan, or every candidate. The task is to reject dishonest caricatures and debate the actual values at stake.
Economic democracy. Universal healthcare. Strong unions. Affordable housing. Quality public education. Dignified retirement. Racial justice. Reproductive freedom. Environmental survival. And a government accountable to people rather than concentrated wealth.
Call those policies socialism. Call them social democracy. Call them the New Deal updated for the twenty-first century. The label matters far less than the result.
An economy should serve humanity. Humanity should never serve an economic system.

Egberto, you mention "defund the police" as something that needs explaining and feeds propaganda. During the massive George Floyd street protests, AOC said, "To end unrest, end the conditions that create it" = common decency + common sense.
