Author of the linked Common Dreams op-ed says Medicare (dis)Advantage is overcharging the US Treasury $140 billion a year. Worth noting, a 2020 Congressional Budget Office analysis found that a public single-payer system like Medicare for All could SAVE our nation (that's you and me, amigo) as much as $650 billion a year. Billion-with-a-B.
It equates to an average $5,000/yr for every US household — yours, mine, everyone. Multiply by 125 million households. Think what this largely *tax-free* shot in the arm could do for your household and for the American economy.
Further, that's net cost savings while fully covering every man, woman and child in America for all needed care. It's staggering. Even today I find it hard to wrap my mind around it. But this is what a team of economists from across the political spectrum — right, center and left — found to be true in their 200-page analysis.
The CBO wasn't done. A couple of years later it released a qualitative 50-page report, broadly describing some of the likely economic impacts. Here's a summary: https://medium.com/@idember/pigs-fly-cbo-admits-medicare-for-all-will-aid-people-businesses-economy-e32d72ce59a2 .
Btw, the CBO was and still is headed by a Trump-appointed economist who spent his prior career on Wall Street. Go figure.
Legislation to start making all this happen, sits on the desk of every US House member (HR 3421, 113 co-sponsors) and every Senator (S.1655, 14 co-sponsors). Not a single co-sponsor in either chamber is Republican. Not one.
Whether Dem or GOP, it's time to demand action. Let's get this done.
