AOC Says Mayor Eric Adams Attack on Migrants ‘Is Not Leadership’: Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is among those criticizing New York City’s Democratic Mayor Eric Adams for comments he made this week demonizing asylum-seekers and other migrants. The latest conflagration kicked off by Mayor Adams, the former police officer turned politician, began Wednesday night when he charged that an influx of migrants would “destroy New York City” as he lamented that he could “not see an ending” to the perceived crisis and said the federal government must do more to help. Defenders of refugee and migrant rights, however, pushed back after video of the remarks spread on social media. In a Twitter post on Friday, Ocasio-Cortez castigated Adams. While agreeing that the Biden administration should “step up” to do more, she said that solutions to the growing number of migrants do exist but that “Alienating people isn’t one of them.” [More]

‘Corporate Media Will Always Side With CEOs’ – Sanders Rips Coverage of Looming UAW Strike: U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders on Tuesday blasted corporate media coverage of United Auto Workers’ contract demands and looming strike, echoing a video released last week by the UAW amid negotiations with vehicle manufacturers Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis. A short list of media conglomerates control the vast majority “of what the American people see, hear, and read,” and that is clearly on display with the labor conflict between the union and the “Big Three,” Sanders (I-Vt.) argued in a statement, highlighting that “the major reasons as to why autoworkers might go out on strike have been rarely, if ever, the focus of the corporate media’s coverage.” [More]

Census Data Show Poverty Is a Policy Choice: Economic relief measures enacted in response to the pandemic strengthened the U.S. social safety net and made a historic dent on poverty in 2021. New Census Bureau data show that the expiration of these key programs caused a significant increase in poverty last year, with the number of children in poverty more than doubling. Bold policy initiatives such as economic impact/stimulus payments and the expansion of the Child Tax Credit (CTC) helped to shelter millions of people from poverty during a time of social and economic uncertainty at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. For example, the Census Bureau’s most accurate measure of poverty—the Supplemental Poverty Measure—showed that poverty declined by more than 30% between 2019 and 2021, reaching a historic low of 7.8% in 2021. During the same three-year period, child poverty declined by more than half, reaching a historic low of 5.2% in 2021. Importantly, gains during this period were observed across all racial and ethnic groups. [More]
